Sherri Maddox never imagined that her life could be endangered by a spider. But that’s exactly what happened to this brave Virginia woman. While on a kayaking trip down the Staunton River, Maddox was bitten on the lip by a venomous spider. What followed was a harrowing ordeal, filled with hallucinations and hospitalization, as she fought against the venom coursing through her body, causing her lip to swell to multiple times its original size.

Caught off guard, Maddox initially dismissed the pain, unaware that she had been bitten by a brown recluse spider – a highly venomous and dangerous arachnid. Seeking medical attention the following day, she was prescribed antibiotics. Sadly, the medication did not work as swiftly as she had hoped, and her lip continued to swell. It soon became apparent to Maddox and those around her that her condition was far more serious than originally thought.

At almost 50 years old, Maddox, a seasoned river enthusiast, had spent most of her life on the Staunton River since she was six years old. Facing uncertainty, she confided, “I was just praying I wasn’t going to die because I hear horror stories, and you look on the internet and see all this stuff.” It was a challenging time for her, with doctors acknowledging her uncertain future. She vividly described her swollen lip as “a big ol’ balloon on my face.”

Finally admitted to the hospital, Maddox received a rapid diagnosis of a brown recluse spider bite. Doctors initiated the treatment by administering antibiotics to counteract the venomous effects of the spider’s fangs. Additionally, Maddox underwent surgery to remove the dead tissue from her lip.

In an interview with WRIC, Maddox revealed, “I thought I wasn’t going to live through the night when they first told me. It looked like a big ol’ balloon on my face.” But thankfully, against all odds, Maddox survived. Today, she considers herself incredibly fortunate to be alive. She strongly urges others who experience a similar situation to seek immediate help, hoping to prevent a repeat of what she endured. Her advice to others is clear, “If you think there’s anything wrong with your body, go see somebody. Because if I didn’t go see somebody, anything could have happened.”

What are your thoughts on this venomous spider bite? It is a reminder to always be vigilant and seek help when needed.
