Sisters Nikkita, Sam and Rachel

Sam Bryant, a 44-year-old woman from Melbourne, Australia, had a long and challenging journey to motherhood. Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003, Sam preserved her uterus in the hope of one day starting a family. However, she endured 14 failed IVF attempts, costing her a staggering £54,740 (A$100,000). It seemed like her dreams of becoming a mother were slipping away.

But then, an incredible twist of fate occurred. Sam’s two sisters, Rachel and Nikkita, stepped forward to offer their help. Rachel, a 40-year-old school teacher, selflessly offered to be Sam’s surrogate, while Nikkita, 27, generously donated her eggs. The sisters’ unwavering support gave Sam and her husband Ben, a primary school teacher, renewed hope.

After one unsuccessful attempt, the sisters didn’t give up. They persevered and were overjoyed when the second round of IVF resulted in success. Starla, their beautiful daughter, was born in 2017—bringing immeasurable joy and love into their lives.

Sam expressed her gratitude, saying, “We’ve always been really close, but this experience has brought us even closer together. I can’t even explain how lucky we feel to have Starla in our lives. She is everything to us, and we cherish every moment with her.”

The connection between Starla and her aunties is extraordinary. Sam explained, “They accept their role as aunties, and there are no hang-ups about the fact that Rachel gave birth. Starla has a special bond with both of them.”

Rachel had a smooth pregnancy, with Sam and Nikkita right by her side when she gave birth. The whole experience solidified the sisters’ relationship, and now they get to see their niece regularly, as they all live within twenty minutes of each other.

Reflecting on their journey, Sam said: “My sisters were the ones who suggested it, and I’m forever grateful for their generosity and love. It’s amazing how close we’ve become. Starla already understands her unique story and knows that she was born from the love between her two aunties.”

Nikkita, the egg donor, shared her perspective: “I wanted to play a role in helping Sam and Ben become parents and knew that by doing this, Sam would have a biological connection to the child. Seeing Sam and Ben with Starla for the first time filled me with immense pride and a sense of accomplishment.”
